The main aims of our research and taught programmes are to provide more in-depth knowledge of psychological phenomena, experimental design, advance data analysis and systematic approach in all aspects of research.
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework audit, the School of Psychology was ranked in the top 20 in the UK for its research.
Research at the School of Psychology ranges from basic, theoretical science to problem-driven projects that are commissioned by government and industry. For over a century, research in the School has demonstrated influence on practice, most notably in clinical, industrial and forensic settings.

Our programmes are delivered in the best possible learning environment with access to world class facilities including:
Psychophysiology Centre – This facility consists of several spacious rooms that house electroencephalographic (EEG) equipment and sound-attenuated, shielded testing booths.
Eye tracking facilities – We have four in-house eye trackers. The Eyelink 1000 system allows the recording of eye gaze at a sampling rate of 1000 Hz.
With the choice of MSc and MRes postgraduate degrees, there is a psychology programme to suit those with a psychology background and those who are new to the field. Our programmes are delivered on campus or via blended learning starting in September and/or January.
MSc Psychological Studies is designed to introduce graduates from other disciplines to the study of psychology, as a first step to pursuing a career in this area. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in an area of psychology best suited to your interests or career aspirations, by choosing from a range of elective courses, some of which can be studied online, including:
- Mental Health
- Organisational Psychology
- Applied Developmental Psychology
MRes Psychology is suitable for those with a degree in Psychology or a cognate discipline. The programme provides an excellent platform for those students wishing to pursue a career in psychological research, particularly those wishing to study towards a PhD.
Our MSc Psychological Studies programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). Chartered Membership of the BPS opens up career paths in specialised areas of professional psychology such as counselling, health, occupational and clinical psychology.
Our MRes in Psychology is recognised as compliant with the UK Economic and Social Research Council training guidelines, and the school is a member of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science.
