Cardiff University
School of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Our environment
Cardiff University has ensured our graduates leave with lucrative and sought-after skills and experience in the Earth and environmental sciences, ready to make an impact in their chosen fields, since as far back as 1901.

With internationally recognised Earth scientists from across the discipline in one place, Cardiff University’s world-class research has enhanced the student experience with cutting edge teaching which echoes real-world industry standard practice. We’ve designed our degrees with industry in mind, and our students report that graduate employers are impressed with the accuracy and immediacy of the knowledge taught on each of our three MSc programmes.

We provide a vibrant, collaborative environment for postgraduate studies, with our student and staff communities encompassing diverse national, cultural and professional backgrounds. We are one of the UK’s only geoscience universities providing accessible in-person fieldwork for students with additional access requirements, and we’re proud of our inclusive and friendly School culture, both for taught and research programmes.

Our postgraduate taught programmes
We have three MSc taught programmes on offer which address contemporary environmental, policy and research issues, whilst also providing you with essential hands-on fieldwork experience in internationally famous locations such as Bannau Brycheiniog national park.

Whether you’re continuing from undergraduate study, returning to education to further your career goals, or honing entirely new skills, our long-running master’s degrees will give you the skills and knowledge to impress in your chosen field.

All of our postgraduate courses offer opportunities to embed knowledge into practice through project work and fieldtrips (with the cost of compulsory fieldtrips included within your course fee).

Applied Environmental Geology (MSc)
Water in a Changing World (MSc)
Environmental Hazards (MSc)

Our postgraduate research programmes
Our postgraduate research degrees are based on independent full-time research work, with an academic supervisor to guide you in discovering new and exciting areas. We’ve invested heavily in our research facilities, providing high-spec and well-equipped laboratories for analysing the trace element and isotopic composition of a whole range of samples, from meteorites to seawater.

Our vibrant research environment provides PhD and MPhil students with opportunities to work with world experts across seven research centres: Climate Change Impacts, Living Oceans, Environmental Hazards and Risk, Habitable Earth, Tectonics and Geophysics, Magmatic Processes, and Minerals and Energy.

Each year we recruit approximately 15 students for PhD degrees, who benefit from participating in teaching exercises, School activities and essential skills-training experiences.

Our facilities
Our teaching is based in Cardiff University’s historic Main Building on Park Place, which has welcomed students from all backgrounds to share their love of science for well over 100 years. You can also expect to take fieldtrips to the Welsh countryside and overseas, to sites of outstanding natural beauty as well as locations featuring geological rarities and unique geographical heritage.

We have a dedicated postgraduate library within the Main Building as well as purpose-built laboratories and workrooms. Cardiff University’s Main Library is just a short walk away, where you can access our dedicated subject librarians and a wealth of digital and physical resources in our cosy and collaborative learning spaces.
