Summary

This MA course is designed to develop an advanced knowledge of the principles, application and practices of professional interior architecture and design – encouraging you to come up with original, creative solutions to challenging design problems.

We cover a wide scope of your potential field of work –the scale of which is expressed in the axiom SMLXL, which stands for Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. You should learn to develop and design identities for a variety of spatial environments in the specific areas of SMLXL, considering the scale of the environment. This ranges from interior objects to large public spaces, small spaces such as coffee shops to large scale interiors such as airports.

There is a strong focus on interdisciplinary integration, professional enhancement and design enquiry – students from different disciplines may work together in teams, charrettes and industry competitions.

The course recruits nationally and internationally, from countries such as France, China, Saudi Arabia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Hong Kong, Indonesia. Cultural diversity is a theme throughout the course. Discussions, seminars, collaborations and social events allow students to network, work together inside and outside the curriculum.

**Why choose this course?**

This Master’s degree has been designed to help develop a critical and innovative mind-set in the context of future global design environments and emerging design agendas.

Complementary courses in areas such as product design, transport and fashion design provide opportunities for interesting multidisciplinary activities, research and discourse with students and staff from different backgrounds. This should help you to develop a healthy attitude to the design process. You should learn to appreciate the importance of collaboration, networking and the benefits of incorporating knowledge from other related disciplines; vital for if you enter professional practice in the wider design industry.

Our teaching team comprises dedicated professionals and educators, many actively consulting or holding directorships in design studios, keeping close contact with industry, monitoring changing trends and new developments. Their research interests are vast and varied – from the use of spatial design to triggering emotional responses, interaction between spaces and the human body, architectural heritage and design writing to parametric design and the phenomenology of space.
Our links with the creative industries span a range of sectors across the UK and internationally, including Hong Kong, China, The Netherlands, France, Spain and USA, among others. Our UK industry partners provide input throughout the course through dedicated lecture series, visits, crits, collaborative industry projects and guest teaching.

You will benefit from studio-based learning where lectures, presentations and project developments are taking place. To help enhance your employability and design relevance, you’ll have opportunities to apply for professional internships or work on ‘live’ projects, to help develop leadership skills in design creativity, innovation and collaboration.

We pride ourselves on having an ethos that allows our students to build on specialist professional and creative identities. There are opportunities to attend industry lectures and visits by professionals in all areas of interior design, architecture, products and related creative industries. We collaborate and take part in competitions connected to industry and ‘live’ client briefs. You may also be given opportunities to show work nationally and internationally at design events and through collaborations.

There will be opportunities to develop your specialism in a wide range of contexts to suit your career ambitions and skills. For example, you may work in the commercial sector, retail, marketing and branding, health and education to cultural fields.
