Welcome in the New Year the postgrad student way

Champagne

If you’re a postgraduate, you're likely to be spending much more time in your university town over the Christmas break – including New Year's Eve. Unlike undergrads, who tend to be back home, it's time for you to celebrate the incoming year, student style.

So what can you do to take advantage of this? Here are our top five tips to see in the New Year, postgrad student style.

Go Away Somewhere I can hear you wondering how that's student style – surely holidays are expensive? While this is true, there are ways to have a great student New Year cheaply and far away from distractions. Try renting out a scout hut or caravan in a campsite, and you can party in style for very little money and with the chance to make lots of noise. The more of you that go, the cheaper it is, so why not make a full group holiday of it?

Go Overboard On Festive Decorating Yes, this can be done in any student house. You’ll have just finished celebrating Christmas, so instead of starting to take those decorations down, why not add more in? This can be part of the fun of planning – spend a day with your housemates crafting sparkly streamers and baking themed cakes. Make the run up to the main even as much fun as New Year’s Eve itself – although don’t forget to squeeze in a bit of postgrad revision if necessary.

Try Something New If you’re the adventurous sort, you could always try something new. Rather than the standard house party, why not do something a little different. For those of you with a little extra money, think outside the box – what about something like a swing dance night for example. Even if you've never danced before, they can be great fun. For those more dramatically inclined, why not try a murder mystery? You can either book a professional one, or if you're game, write one yourself! Rope in as many friends as you can, give them their characters, and let them loose. You can even use midnight as the deadline. Think beyond the usual, and make this New Year's Eve something different and spectacular.

Don’t Forget The First!

Let’s face it, it’s student tradition to celebrate the Eve, rather than the Day. Wild parties or quiet nights in a pub, it's all about the night before. But why should it be? Make it into a full weekend – and, since it's very likely you'll be feeling a little fragile on the 1st January, plan a delicious brunch for the next day. Extend the celebrations by inviting your friends over and cooking a huge meal together, before spending the afternoon relaxing in each other’s company. What better start to a New Year than spending the first day with the people you care about, just having a good time?

Plan Your Resolutions Together Why not spend New Year's Day itself planning your resolutions together? You’re far more likely to stick to them if other people are there to torment you about them, and they might pick up on habits you have that you’ve never realised. Whether it’s promising to revise more regularly, aiming to clean the kitchen more regularly, or simply just a resolution of not panicking so much over essays', coming up with them as a group is a great way to decide what to do. Plus, everyone else will be coming up with student-specific ones, so there should be one or two you can steal!
