Student City Guide: Sheffield

Postgraduate courses can be immensely rewarding regardless of the city you are studying in, and a memorable experience regardless of your age or place of birth. Studying in the UK is no less enjoyable than anywhere else in the world, and it doesn't have to be in London or Birmingham to be an experience which students will be able to remember for the rest of their life.

Most of the cities in the North of the United Kingdom will provide just that vibrancy which young students require, such as thriving night-life, plenty of pubs, nightclubs and somewhere to eat in the early morning. More mature students will also find the Northern part of the UK a wonderful place to study, for its cultural and social aspects and a generally friendly atmosphere.

One such place where postgraduate students are likely to have a memorable experience is Sheffield, a city with much variety and plenty to do. Sheffield is known for its music scene which spans a wide range of music genres, from indie rock to hip hop, and students who enjoy concerts are certain to have a great time in one of the many clubs the city has to offer.

Of course, music isn't the only thing students can look forward to in Sheffield as there are plenty of restaurants, cafés and coffee shops which welcome every walk of life. If you'd like to know more about what it would be like to study and live as an undergraduate in Sheffield keep reading and all the mysteries shall be unveiled.

Fresh Student Living Student Eating in Sheffield Along the London Road there are plenty of restaurants for students, regardless of simple or more refined tastes. Anything from Chinese to Italian restaurants are bound to satisfy the sternest of culinary demands, with places like Bragazzi for lovers of Italian food or the Blue Moon which offers a number of dishes suited to vegetarians.

Other places worthy of note are eateries like Ambar Restaurant, centred on culinary delights from North Eastern India and located in Ecclesall Road, and Cubana which features a pan-american ambience with a great selection of cocktails.

Music As briefly mentioned the music scene amply caters to those who love going out and living the experience of a live concert. Sheffield has been a haven for popular emergent artists in Britain for the last 20 years, with people like Jarvis Cocker, Gavin Bryars and Dave Berry all hailing from the city once famous for its metal.

Venues like the Redhouse will find students experience the vibrancy of a real independent music scene, with a number of different bands being regulars. Other venues, like the Academy or the Leadmill, will be perfect for those who prefer the more renowned artists or larger concerts. There is something for everyone, and indie pubs like the Dog and Partridge or The Grapes will make the music-pub experience in Sheffield a memorable one.

Pubs, Bars and Clubs It is fine to visit coffee shops and restaurants as a student, but it's common knowledge that daily revision or writing essays is thirsty work for most. There are plenty of watering holes in the city and most, like the The Cavendish in West Street or the Common Room, are ideally suited to students without being too stuffy or noisy.

For students who prefer sampling real ale, there are pubs like the Red House or Riverside Cafe Pubs which offer plenty of palatable ales to savour while discussing politics or simply staring at drying walls.

Plenty of nightclubs are located near the university, with places like Corporation offering plenty of alternative music. Bars like the Forum Cafe Bar are attractive to students who prefer a more classy locale, while the Student's Union isn't a stranger to boasting some top events along the Western Bank.

In short something for everyone in the town of Sheffield, making your student experience all the more worth it.
