Student City Guide: Lincoln

The pretty and historic Cathedral city of Lincoln in home to two universities, the University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste University. It's not such a small town, either: with a population in the urban area of over 130,000, there are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and events to keep you happy as a postgrad student here.

Entertainment As a Ye Olde English town, perhaps unsurprisingly, Lincoln has a lot to offer in the way of traditional pubs. For a quiet pint after a hard day at the books, try The Strugglers Inn, a favourite for real ale by an open log fire. If Porn Star Martinis and champagne cocktails are your preferred beverages for a night out, then trendy bar The Strait and Narrow should cater to your needs. For gigs, stand-up comedy, and other live events, The Engine Shed is another student favourite. The Lincoln Performing Arts Centre on the University of Lincoln Campus is open to students and the public alike, offering plenty in the way of live theatre and performance and bringing culture to the city.

Shops Lincoln has all the usual High Street suspects, but for something a bit more special, try the Bailgate area of the City's Cathedral Quarter. It's what's left of Medieval Lincoln (even some Roman heritage remains), and has cobbled lanes and pretty independent shops and boutiques. Fresh from the Field is a traditional greengrocer's, while Follie specialises in trinkets and gifts. Always important for students: Lindum Books is a quality independent bookseller in this picturesque part of town. If you've had one too many late-night kebabs and can't remember the last time you ate an apple, Yellowbelly's on Bailgate will set you right with a host of sugar-free and vegan treats, as well as vitamins and other health supplements.

Additionally, Lincoln has a good line in second hand and independent booksellers, including the Oxfam Bookshop and Unicorn Tree Books in the Central Market.

Eating Out, Coffee Shops and Tea Rooms For many students, eating out is a treat reserved for special occasions (or for when someone else is paying). If you need somewhere to take your parents when they visit, though, Lincoln has an abundance of tearooms, perhaps the best of which is Bunty's Tearoom on Steep Hill: it's all mismatched vintage china and deliciously soft carrot cake.

If you need a little caffeine to fuel the next chapter of your thesis, family-run Italian cafe Bar Unico on St Benedict's Square will keep you in rich, authentic espressos and creamy lattes in the daytime, while its pizzas and gelato do very nicely after dark. If you're looking for a quirky treat, The Cheese Society on St Martins Lane will serve you up many a cheese-based delight, from rarebit to souffle.

Days Out Because you can't work all the time . If a friend comes to visit or you've got a date, Lincoln has a few attractive options, with the grand Cathedral being the biggest draw. The Museum of Lincolnshire life and The Collection/Usher Gallery are decent local museums, while fans of history and a romantic atmosphere will love William the Conqueror's Castle, which houses one of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta, signed by King John. Doddington Hall and Gardens also has lovely grounds for a walk or a picnic on a summer's day.

One activity which won't cost anything at all is a wander around the Cathedral Quarter, which hosts regular artists' and farmers' markets, as well as the city's annual Christmas Market. Come here for a walk to clear your head, or to grab a coffee at one of the the independent cafes. Lincoln has a lot to offer!
