Scholarship Options for International Students Studying in the UK

The UK is a very popular destination for international postgraduate students, offering a high quality of education and a chance to explore and integrate into the British education and employment culture. There are numerous scholarships available to international students studying in the UK, and we've compiled a list of some of the most popular ones to help make your search that little bit easier:

British Chevening Scholarships

The UK government’s global scholarship program is available to international students from over 100 countries, who are able to demonstrate the potential to become a future leader, opinion former, and decision maker. There are currently over 700 international students studying under the Chevening Scholarship program in UK universities, coming from all over the world. The scholarship program is intended to give exceptionally talented students the financial support required to study in the UK at a postgraduate level. It is directed at those who have been identified as potential future leaders, and it ranges across a large number of subjects including politics, civil society, media, academia, and religion. Full scholarship details and application forms can be found here.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan

Aimed at Commonwealth citizens who have the potential to make a positive contribution to the development of their home country after finishing their studies, the CSFP is a unique opportunity for students from developing Commonwealth countries. It is directed at students who are working towards a vocation that will directly affect the development goals of their home nation, showing leadership qualities in that profession. The scholarships can last from 1 – 3 years, and are designed to cover travel costs to and from the UK, living expenses, and tuition fees. In certain circumstances, additional money may be available to cover the cost of housing and caring for a spouse or family during this time.

The Professional Fellowship Plan is awarded for a much shorter period, generally three months, and is aimed at professionals working in the development of Commonwealth countries who wish to update their professional training with additional postdoctoral research or specified training. They are available to those holding a teaching appointment in a developing Commonwealth country. Further information on these scholarships can be found here.

Royal Society Fellowships

Researchers from North America and Asia may be eligible for fellowships from the Royal Society. The scheme is designed to attract extremely high performing postdoctoral scientists to the UK to conduct high quality research. The program is available for a maximum of one year for researchers from Asia and up to two years for researchers from USA and Canada. Research must be involved with the field of natural sciences only, and not with clinical or social sciences. More information about these fellowships is available from the Royal Society website.

UNESCO Fellowship Bank Scheme

This program is available to international students who are studying in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, culture, informatics or communication and information.

Applications can be made directly through the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation at a local level.

And don't forget to look at our funding opportunities too!

Hi Nduka,

Many universities offer region/country-specific scholarships, so I think your best starting point would be to contact the universities that you are interested in and asking them about their funding opportunities.
