Postgrad Living - With Your Parents!

Postgraduate life will certainly prove to offer you a number of unique challenges. Some will be interesting and exciting while others you may find to be slightly frustrating. One such instance is if you choose (or are obligated) to move back in with your parents. This may not be what you had expected to happen and it is perfectly reasonable to feel a slight amount of apprehension; especially if you had previously resided at university. However, have no fear, for while there certainly be a few changes to adapt to, there are also several benefits which cannot be ignored.

Undeniable Changes It would be foolish to claim that your life is going to be the same upon returning home. You may feel as if your freedom has become slightly hindered. Additionally, you could be asked to contribute to the household in some form. Either way, it is likely that these changes will be stressful in the beginning; particularly if you are trying to balance this situation with a postgraduate workload.

The Bright Side While this may seem to paint a gloomy picture, nothing could be further from the truth. First and foremost, we all know that postgraduate life can be quite expensive living away from home. You will save a great deal of money by living with your parents. This money can then be used for nights out on the town or even to take weekend trips throughout the country . These getaways can help you to blow off any steam and give you a fresh mind for the week ahead.

Free Food Well, the food may not be completely free, but the title surely grabbed your attention. If there is one mantra in the life of a postgraduate, it is clearly "You have to eat". While you may not be supplied with a free ride, you will absolutely save more money than possible living away from home. Additionally, there are most likely one or two home-cooked meals that you missed while you were away.

No Job? Less of a Problem One of the pitfalls of many an postgraduate is the unavoidable fact that he or she may be forced to take whatever job they can get in order to make ends meet. We all know someone who was forced to work at a local fast food restaurant or a construction site in order to survive. Living at home will help you avoid this situation. Being forced to work a decidedly dismal job is not only stressful, but it may actually affect your studies. So, be thankful that you have a warm bed and a roof over your head without being forced into such a position.

A Different Perspective Many of us have had difficulties communicating with our parents. This was perhaps one of the main reasons why we chose to live on a university campus. You may be surprised to learn that when you return home, your parents will give you much more freedom than you remember. Frequently, they will appreciate the hard work and sacrifices that needed to be made up until this point and suddenly, they will speak to you more as an adult than simply a son or daughter.

So, remember that this is only a relatively short-term situation and although it may take some adaptation, there are indeed some advantages that cannot be ignored. You will most likely look back and be thankful that this option was available.
