New rules for international students in the UK

New visa and immigration rules designed to curb abuse of the student visa system in the UK were announced last year and came into effect a few weeks ago on Friday 6th April 2012.

The purpose of these reforms is to make the UK entrance criteria for international students tougher, as well as to introduce new limits on work entitlements and to close the post-study work route .

The international student market is very important to the UK – both in terms of the academic skills it brings to the country and the boost to the economy, not to mention the cultural enhancement it offers.

Home Secretary, Theresa May MP, explains, “International students not only make a vital contribution to the UK economy but they also make our education system one of the best in the world. But it has become very apparent that the old student visa regime failed to control immigration and failed to protect legitimate students from poor-quality colleges. The new system is designed to ensure students come for a limited period, to study, not work, and make a positive contribution while they are here.”

It is really important that international students and UK institutions have a proper understanding of these new rules and regulations and are fully compliant with UK Border Agency procedures.

What do you think of the new rules for international students? Do you understand them?
