Studying with strength – my postgraduate experience so far…
Zena Maziak is studying an MSc International Business Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University. In this blog she talks about her rewarding experience as a postgraduate student, both academically and socially; the transition from being an undergraduate student to postgrad life; and earning a professional qualification alongside her studies.
“Hi, I’m Zena – currently pursuing my MSc in International Business Management at Cardiff Metropolitan University. My academic journey has been deeply rewarding, but also uniquely challenging, as I’ve navigated both my studies and life with multiple sclerosis (MS). Despite the ups and downs, my time at Cardiff Met has been filled with growth, support, and countless achievements that I’ll always be proud of.
I began my journey here with a BSc in Marketing Management and graduated with First Class Honours. Along the way, I also earned a Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) qualification in Digital Marketing, achieved the Cardiff Met Award, and received certification from the Carbon Literacy Project for my commitment to sustainability.
One of the things that drew me to Cardiff Met was its reputation for being a supportive and inclusive university. Living with MS means managing unpredictable symptoms, and having access to a flexible and understanding learning environment was incredibly important to me. Cardiff Met’s focus on personalised support and wellbeing services made a huge difference during both my undergraduate and postgraduate years.
The CIM qualification I completed in my second year was a standout experience, it took place over two intensive summer weeks and gave me a real competitive edge in the job market. Balancing the demands of that course with my health wasn’t always easy, but the staff were consistently encouraging and understanding – and celebrating my results felt all the more meaningful because of it.
University life isn’t only about lectures and deadlines; some of my best moments have come from getting involved in student activities, making friends, and learning outside the classroom. Cardiff Met’s Students’ Union and wide range of societies helped me feel connected even on the harder days.
To anyone considering Cardiff Met: if you value a university that invests in your future, supports your wellbeing, and gives you the tools to succeed both academically and personally, I couldn’t recommend it more. And if, like me, you're managing a long-term condition, know that you don’t have to do it alone. With the right support and mindset, it’s absolutely possible to thrive.”
Applications are open for this year’s Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries worth £2,000 each until Tuesday 30th September 2025 – apply now for the chance to win £2,000 towards your masters degree or PhD.
