Where to Look if You're a Postgrad LGBTQ Student

University is the time where many people figure out who they are and what they want from life. However, everyone does this at their own pace and it sometimes takes a little while to connect with people with the same interests. This can be particularly difficult for postgrad students, especially if you didn’t socialise too much during your undergrad course because you were studying hard. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways for postgrad LGBTQ students to find their feet.

Counselling University counsellors are always available to give advice or simply provide someone to talk to. There is no stigma to going to see a counsellor and they can provide valuable advice and tips. It's not just for if you're sad - if you're simply worried about your family accepting you, or just where to start looking to meet people, student counselling can be a great resource. The great thing about counselling at university is that this is a free service and anything you say to the counsellor is completely confidential. Sometimes, simply having someone to talk to can make a big difference and help you to see that you are not alone.

Join the University’s LGBTQ Group Most universities have their own LGBTQ group that is open to students of all ages. If you have not joined the LGBTQ group before, this is a good time to check it out. Don't be nervous about being a postgrad - whilst you might feel a little out of place from all the enthusiastic and excited undergrads, you have the advantage of experience. You might be new to the LGBTQ scene, but you're an old hand at university - so offer advice on what you're good at, and you'll almost certainly get help in return! The size of the LGBTQ group will usually depend on the size of the university as well as its location. Some are extremely large and include hundreds of like-minded students. These groups organise a wide range of events, from wild parties to casual chats and just about everything in between. Some LGBTQ groups even have their own sports teams and drama groups and joining one of these groups is a great way to feel part of the community while discovering a new hobby at the same time. if the LGBTQ group doesn’t offer an activity that you are interested in, you can always suggest that they start this activity at the next meeting.

Start Your Own Group As a postgrad student, you may well find that you are slightly more mature than many of the other university students and have different interests. If the local student union and other popular hangout spots no longer interest you, find somewhere you enjoy hanging out and start your own group. It is likely that there are other postgrad LGBTQ students that are also looking for a way to connect.

Take the first step and you could make new friends and have fun. You could even work with the main LGBTQ group to create a postgrad specific one!

Local LGBTQ Centres Most large towns and cities have their own LGBT centres where people of all ages can simply drop in to hand out and meet other people. These centres are ideal for postgrads because they often attract older people as well as members of the local community. This gives postgrad students the chance to connect with their peers and step away from university life for a while. Most LGBT centres arrange special social evening and events and these are good times to meet other people and unwind in a more relaxed environment.
