Fields With A Bright Future For Postgrads

It's no secret that in the last decade or so the government has been pushing for more and more young people across the country to go to university. This has led to a more educated populace but unfortunately it has also diluted the value of a degree, as simply being a university graduate is no longer sufficient to find a well-paid job. How you will do largely depends on what area of the job market you wish to go into after you graduate. The decision to study as a postgraduate student is not one to take lightly. Fortunately there is plenty of help available and we've compiled a list of some areas of study that look to have the brightest futures.

Computer Science/Programming Computers have gone from strength to strength since their invention. Once they were simple counting tools but now our lives practically revolve around them. Virtually everyone owns a smartphone and tablets are beginning to replace PCs as cheap, convenient handheld computers appear to be the way forward. The success stories of app and website developers routinely make international news nowadays. Who hasn't heard of Facebook, Twitter or even Flappy Bird? Programming has become so popular that people are starting to suggest that all postgraduates should learn at least some programming . The internet and devices used to access it don't look like they'll be going away any time soon, so programming and computer science in general looks to be a field with a bright future.

MBA MBAs continue to forge ahead as one of the best fields to study if you want to make a lot of money. Businesses are increasingly looking for MBA holders to add to their management teams and with globalisation showing no sign of stopping there is opportunity at every corner for the savvy businessman. MBAs are expensive but the salaries of higher management more than make up for the cost in most places. Unfortunately this comes at a price, as it's an extremely competitive market and MBA courses are typically expensive. Still, businesses will continue to need educated managers for a long time to come so it's a solid career choice if you are competitive and determined.

Medicine The NHS is struggling to keep sufficiently staffed and there have been a number of scandals in recent years over the import of foreign doctors who could not speak English sufficiently. Medicine has always been a well paid field of study even if the hours are long and hard, but with the dawn of personalised medication seemingly around the corner this field shows no sign of slowing down. It's an extremely competitive field and likely not one you would choose to get into purely for the money but it's a stable career field with good job security and a consistent demand for new graduates.

There are plenty of viable career choices for postgraduates regardless of your specific area of study but the 3 choices listed above are what we feel are some of the most promising fields of study for postgraduates due to promising future career prospects, job stability or other selection criteria.
