Coventry – Student City Guide
With one of the best MBA programs in the UK there for the taking, Coventry University is a top choice for those looking to make it big in business. Whether pursuing a career in business management or another profession, Coventry offers the expert teaching staff, outstanding facilities and nurturing environment you need to succeed. Campus life is equally as dynamic, while beyond, you’ll find plenty of things to do, see and enjoy to make postgraduate life thoroughly satisfying.
Knowing what to expect from your move to Coventry however is a great place to begin as you countdown the days to enrolment on your postgraduate course. In this blog post, we cover all the basics of living, working and studying in the cathedral city at the centre of England’s West Midlands.
Is Coventry an affordable place to live?
Yes! In fact, the city recently placed eighth in a rundown of the cheapest places to live in the UK, with the areas of Stoke Heath, Radford, Foleshill and Holbrooks offering affordability and good, old fashioned West Midlands charm.
For individuals coming to Coventry for postgraduate study, its relatively low housing costs and other monthly expenses make for a pleasant experience. Here Coventry University shares the story – and expenditure – of one of their students living in privately rented accommodation:
“Dhanashree lives a few miles from campus, sharing a rental house with three other friends. She pays £95 a week in rent with electricity, gas, water, broadband, TV licence, and contents insurance included. As a food lover, she spends roughly £70 a week on groceries and eating out. Her phone bill is £8 per week and laundry is £5 per week. To help cover her expenses, she works part-time as a student ambassador.”
Can I work while I study?
Many postgraduate students choose to balance their studies with part-time work to subsidise their income and make their experience of a new city even more authentic. Working while studying for a postgraduate degree isn’t easy, but is necessary for some students. If you’re looking for part-time, vacation or temporary work in and around Coventry, there are many opportunities to explore.
Coventry University even has its own, in-house recruitment agency, thefutureworks, which specialises in helping students at all stages source flexible employment that fits around their studies. Local jobs boards provide a plethora of opportunities for hard-working students looking to earn while they study too.
Like Dhanashree, you can also become a student ambassador to earn extra cash and support your fellow students in the process.
What can I do during my spare time?
There are plenty of great options to entertain yourself in Coventry, and most are very budget friendly indeed.
You can explore the Coventry Transport Museum, which offers free entry and showcases the city’s rich automotive history. Blessed with great weather? Head to the War Memorial Park, it’s perfect for a relaxing walk, a picnic or even a game of football with friends. For book lovers, the Coventry Central Library provides a quiet space to read and study without spending any money at all. If history is more your thing, the ruins of Coventry Cathedral – brilliantly showcased in the climax of 2009 Christmas movie favourite Nativity – are a must-visit, offering a mix of culture and stunning architecture.
FarGo Village is another popular haunt amongst students and locals alike. Here you’ll find independent shops, street food and occasional free events. It’s home to everything from vegan markets and peace forums to cheese festivals and vintage interior shows, so there really is something for everyone!
Don’t forget many student societies at Coventry University and the University of Warwick also offer free or low-cost activities, including sports meets and film nights, and they’ll all help you stay entertained while sticking to your student budget.
