The goal of having a good time over Christmas within the limits of a postgrad budget can appear a bit daunting, but it is definitely possible. You may even find that your reduced spending-power is an advantage because it encourages you to be more thoughtful and innovative. Here are just a few ideas for how you can do Christmas on a postgrad budget: Create a Plan for Your Christmas Spending There is always the risk of spending too much over the holiday period, and this is more likely to happen if you don’t have a plan. You need to decide on your available budget and match this to your expected expenditure. If your financial situation looks particularly grim, you do have some options for dealing with this situation - you could try to find some part-time work to earn some extra cash, or if your situation is especially dire, you can speak to your university to see if you can access some type of bursary or other funds.
Enjoy the Party Season with Cheap Nights Out Christmas is the time when most people like to go out partying – even those who tend to shun social occasions make a special effort at this time of year. A night out on the town at this time of year is likely to put a huge dent in your budget, but you can compromise with a cheap alternative – this could include options like organising a house party or festive dinner. Another option would be to trade your time for free tickets to an event – for example, you could volunteer to set up seating or act as an usher.

The internet is a great resources when it comes to creating things that are both special and most importantly free. Instead of handing over your precious cash for a gift that your loved ones will barely notice, you could create something like a YouTube video where you combine pictures of them with some nice music.
Check Out the Events at Your University You should find that there are cheap or free events taking place at your university. Many students return home at this time of year, but there is usually plenty going on in the run-up to Christmas. You can also often use your student union card to gain access to events at other universities.
It does take a bit of planning to get the most out of Christmas when you are trying so survive on the limited budget available while studying for your masters or PhD. The good news is you are going to be able to have a fantastic time without ending up in the red come January.
