Bursary winner update – £2,000 will transform your PG experience!
Canadian student, Jessica Li, is studying an MA in International Journalism at Cardiff University, partly funded by a Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary worth £2,000.
Jessica has just returned from Asia where she has been working on her dissertation as part of her masters degree – we caught up with her to find out how she has been enjoying her postgraduate journey.
“This program was the first place where I met people who approached journalism as a craft, not a job. The environment is empowering, innovative, and challenging due to the dedication and diversity of its students.
At Cardiff University, we truly have students from countries all over the world and absorbing their unique cultural insights really brings the ‘international’ element. You learn so much, not just in class but also outside of it because postgraduate programs are heavily reliant on your personal initiative. The final dissertation project also allows you to apply your skills on a larger scale, so I appreciated the flexibility and opportunity this provided, as I ended up flying all the way to Asia to pursue my journalistic story.
For any masters, you get out what you put in. Thus, the most successful students are the ones who enter this program with a good idea of what they want to get out of it. It’s extremely important to consider the course modules and their alignment with your career aspirations. I found that Cardiff's International Journalism program to be the golden intersection of journalism and filmmaking, which allowed me to pursue journalism without sacrificing my passion for visual storytelling. The course modules delivered on their promises according to my prior research, so I felt that every class was highly relevant to my goals.
I now realise that undergrad was a marathon and postgrad was a sprint! The first two months will definitely serve as an adjustment period in terms of workload, but my supervisors were extremely approachable, and I was guided every step of the way. Postgraduate programs also feel very different to undergraduate programs because they are highly specialised and the class is much smaller, so you will be able to get to know each of your classmates very well.
So, at the end of the day, it’s really about the people. The network and friendships I’ve created here are going to last a lifetime and I’ve found it extremely beneficial to speak to past alumni who have gone on to have extremely prolific careers. Overall, my masters degree has been a transformative experience. While I had very little free time outside of the program, I was grateful to be immersed in this environment which helped me grow as a person, and now that it is coming to an end, I can tell that I have gained the confidence to move into this field professionally.”
Applications are open for this year’s Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries worth £2,000 each until Tuesday 30th September 2025 – apply now for the chance to win £2,000 towards your masters degree or PhD.
