The benefits of postgraduate online and distance learning
Studying a postgraduate program online is an increasingly popular choice for mid-career professionals and international students alike.
Distance learning allows you to combine study with work and other commitments, providing a convenient way to gain a vocational qualification from anywhere in the world. So let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you should choose to study your postgraduate course online.
Career progression
Qualified professionals appreciate the need for a multi-disciplinary approach in order to carry out their responsibilities effectively. Whatever the focus of your daily work, online and distance learning offers a means to broaden and update your skills.
Flexible learning
Online and distance learning allows you to manage your study time around work and personal commitments. With a flexible structure you get to choose when and where to study, at a pace to suit you, from anywhere in the world!
Saving money & spreading costs
The cost of studying as an online learner is much less than the cost of full-time residential study in the UK. It can also be spread over several years, allowing you to manage the costs alongside other financial outgoings.
Professional networking
Participating in online discussions opens opportunities for you to communicate directly with other students, share ideas, promoting peer-learning and build up a global network of professional contacts.
UK providers of distance learning programs
Plenty of well-respected UK universities carry extensive portfolios of online postgraduate programs for students to choose from, including the University of London. And did you know that SOAS is the largest provider of postgraduate distance learning courses in the University of London’s portfolio? SOAS has over 20 years of experience delivering distance learning programs to more than 3,000 students in 160 countries.
What distance learning courses can you study at SOAS?
SOAS has a wealth of expertise in a wide range of subject areas – and these are taught out of a selection of its different departments:
Centre for Financial and Management Studies (CeFiMS)
Increasing professional understanding of modern finance and management, CeFiMS offers programs in: Banking, Financial Law, International Business, Quantitative Finance, Management, Economic and Public Policy.
Centre for Development, Environment and Policy
CeDEP seeks to address some of the greatest challenges of our times, offering certificates, diplomas and masters programs in Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy
CISD provides a cross-disciplinary approach, exploring the key concepts, theories, and debates surrounding international affairs, contemporary diplomatic practice, global corporations, climate policy, security and strategy.
Department of Development Studies
Humanitarian Action and International Development are the latest online programs at SOAS. Combining globalisation, migration and displacement, conflict and the political economy, these new online degrees critically engage with humanitarian principles and practice.
Plus, there are new programs in Gender and Media set to launch later in 2020.
What if you can’t commit to a PG degree yet?
If you’re not ready to commit to a full postgraduate degree at this stage in your life, then an Individual Professional Award from CeFiMS or CeDEP is the perfect alternative. An Individual Professional Award (IPA) is a great option if you want to upskill in a niche subject area but don’t have time to commit to a full postgraduate degree or don’t quite meet the entry requirements. IPAs are the academic qualification you receive after the completion of one module. At SOAS they are part of the degree programs, so you can transfer credits from these modules when you are ready to apply for a postgraduate certificate, diploma or masters degree.
