5 Things To Do Before You Leave University

There are so many lists floating around that advice or recommend what you should do before leaving university. While some are fun lists that tell you to have as much fun as possible before you join work, others offer a mix of useful tips and certain experiences that you will never have after leaving university.

During your masters and PhD, you would certainly have spent a lot of time studying, doing research and preparing reports. Now that you are finally ready to leave university, here are five things you should do and experience before you move on to the next phase of your life.

Speak to a Careers’ Adviser This may not be the most exciting thing to do before leaving university, but it will help you tremendously. Now that you are ready to join the job market, it is crucial you make the right career choice. Speaking to a career adviser will put things in the right perspective and give you an assurance of being on the right career path. This also can be a boon to those postgrads who have not made up their minds as yet, or who are swaying between two different options.

Advice from an adviser is a useful resource that is available at all universities, and students leaving a university should use this resource to the hilt.

Learn a New Skill Most individuals, after joining work, become so engrossed in their work that they forget that life is a long journey of constant learning. This learning is not about books or research; it is rather acquiring a new skill that could come handy at work. You never know! Take time to join a language class to learn a foreign language. Go in for photography or something that you wanted to learn previously, when academics were keeping you too busy to take up a course. Remember, if you enjoy something, it could turn into a new hobby. And, this hobby would make an excellent stress buster.

Befriend Someone Different from You Once you start working, your social circle will be fixed with people who have similar interests as you. This often can be monotonous and boring, especially if you are yearning for a new and fun experience. That is why you should make an effort to befriend a person who has different interests and a contrasting personality than you. The individual could be another student, shopkeeper, or even a faculty member. You will be amazed how much more such a friend can add to your life and your overall perspective about the things around.

Attend a Free University Event There will be many free events being held at the university. You should make it a point to attend them, as they turn out to be an enriching experience at the end of the day. You could be part of a careers’ fair, have fun at an ‘eat-as-much-free-food’ event, or attend a religious gathering. These are wonderful venues to meet different people and build your social circle beyond your regular friends. These events also allow you to have fun before you join your work and forget all about the word “fun!” Learn to Cook and Clean As a student, the last thing on your mind was cleaning and cooking. However, now you are on the verge of leaving university and it is time to get self-reliant. So, learn to cook as well as clean your abode. It will be a pleasure returning to a clean home after a tiring day’s work, and cooking a feast for yourself.

These are some of the things you should do before you leave university . They will help you in your new life and also allow you to have fun before the journey outside the university campus gets underway.
