Graduate Certificate
Summary
Our Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Mathematics is designed to be as flexible as possible; you will have a choice of modules taken from our BSc Mathematics. You will meet with the course director before the start of the academic year and decide on a suitable programme of study, based on your interests and experience.
The Graduate Diploma is a conversion course for graduates of any discipline looking to switch to a career or further study in mathematics, without having to sign up to a three-year undergraduate degree.
This is an undergraduate-level qualification that will prepare you for postgraduate study. Graduate Certificates/Diplomas typically take one to two years to complete and are made up of two, three or four modules at final-year undergraduate degree level (worth 60, 90 or 120 credits).
The Graduate Certificate is also available by distance learning with a January start. Students who complete this in July have the option to progress onto our MSc Mathematics in October.
**Highlights**
- Designed for students with mathematical ability and a first degree in a quantitative subject.
- An ideal way to refresh and extend existing knowledge, as preparation for further graduate study, such as our MSc Mathematics, or as a stand-alone course.
- Allows you to learn more about the areas of mathematics that most interest you.
- Copies of the recommended texts for each module will be available in the Birkbeck Library. The library also provides facilities for private study. There are several computer workstation rooms.

MSc
Summary
Our MSc Mathematics offers you the chance to study a range of modules in pure and applicable mathematics that are taught by active researchers. Depending on your choices, you will take either seven or eight modules, allowing you to study several different topics in depth, and to focus on the areas that interest you most.
You will also learn the methods of mathematical research: how to read mathematical papers and how to communicate mathematics, both in written form for your project dissertation, and orally when you give presentations about your project.
You will acquire the skills to pursue your interest in the subject, either formally with a research degree, or informally with independent reading. You will come to us as someone with a mathematics degree; you will graduate as a mathematician.
Our students appreciate the flexibility of this course and the valuable support and direct interaction (face-to-face or online) with experienced lecturers who are also active researchers at the forefront of their discipline.
Whichever route you decide to take with our MSc Mathematics, you will gain access to resources for each module via our Moodle virtual learning environment, for example, typed lecture notes with worked examples and practice exercise, recordings of lectures, opportunities for interaction with lecturers and classmates via discussion forums or through our online teaching platform, Blackboard Collaborate. You will also have access to electronic textbooks and other digital resources via the library. In the past we have had students successfully complete our modules remotely from as far away as Antarctica!
**Highlights**
- Offers modules in topics such as group theory, graph theory, combinatorics, coding theory and cryptography.
- Delivered via high-quality, face-to-face teaching in the evenings, or by distance learning, so that you can fit study around daytime commitments.
- You complete a project in your chosen area of mathematics, with guidance from an expert supervisor.
- We are a small and friendly department so our academics are available for you to ask questions and discuss your ideas.
- Birkbeck's mathematicians are all active researchers, mostly in the areas of algebra and combinatorics. We've developed this exciting course around our research strengths.
- Birkbeck has a Library and several workstation rooms. You can also use several local university libraries, including the collection of the London Mathematical Society, a five-minute walk from Birkbeck's main building.
