Do you enjoy writing about people, places and wildlife? Are you interested in environmental issues in Britain and around the world? Would you like to be published, and make a living as a travel or nature writer?
This travel writing and nature writing Master's focuses on learning to write from your own experience in the field. You’ll develop your writing skills and techniques, learn from established writers, and examine the history, context and genres of nature and travel writing.
By meeting practitioners – writers, editors, agents and publishers – you’ll gain a unique insight into the professional skills you require to get your writing published.
How you'll be taught This low residency course allows you to be based wherever you wish, so you can pursue your academic work while maintaining your current lifestyle. It is taken part-time over two years.
This course is taught remotely, with students attending online from wherever they live in the UK or overseas. Most classes are held in the early evenings, to allow for students’ other commitments such as work and family.
At the start of Year 1 we bring everyone together for an intensive residential event over 5 days in Bath, which gives you a chance to get to know your peers and tutors, and to experience some guided writing in the field. Please note that you'll have to contribute towards your costs for this event, which the University also contributes towards.
At the start of Year 2 we repeat this event over a weekend, with an option to attend online if you prefer.
Teaching is mainly through seminars and lectures, including a wide range of guest speakers. There are also one-to-one sessions with your tutors.

| Entry requirements | We’re looking for individuals with: - A real passion for either the natural world and/or places and people Ideally you should have a first degree (for example, BA/BSc), but this is not compulsory, depending on your other experience. Interviews are held online through the year, on a first-come-first served basis. Please submit two to four pieces of your writing before the interview, ideally showing an ability to write non-fiction narrative or feature journalism. |
