Summary
PhD and MD students at BSMS are awarded a joint degree from the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton. Research at BSMS spans basic science through to clinical projects, medical ethics and social science, offering a wide and exciting range of possibilities for postgraduate students.
Postgraduate research at BSMS aims to develop your skills to work as a researcher in cutting edge technologies in subjects related to health and biomedical science. Our PhD and MD graduates have progressed into clinical academic careers, are working in biomedical science companies or have continued in academic science as postdoctoral researchers.
Interdisciplinary study is one of our strengths, and you will be able to work alongside both academic staff with a background in fundamental science and practising clinicians. Our postgraduate students are usually supervised by members of BSMS, the University of Brighton or University of Sussex academic staff, or by clinicians in the NHS.
You will be able to take advantage of the University Researcher Development Frameworks training at both universities, as well as the facilities and equipment at both and in NHS research laboratories.
We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. We’ll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities described in this prospectus. However, if we need to make material changes, for example due to government or regulatory requirements, or unanticipated staff changes, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.
Level | RQF Level 8 |
---|---|
Entry requirements | Entry qualification: (i) a recognised Masters degree or other qualification which is regarded by the Joint Research Degree Approval Board as being equivalent, and which is normally relevant to the programme of study proposed or (ii) substantial appropriate research or professional experience at postgraduate level which resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment. An application made by someone with this experience will be considered on its merits and will normally require independent academic references. [NOTE: Applicants with first or higher second class honours degrees will be taken on initially as MPhil students and will be given the opportunity to upgrade to a PhD after one year, providing adequate progress has been made.] |
