About this Course This MA program teaches you how to communicate effectively across different languages and cultures, with a specific focus on digital communication and translation technologies. It develops expertise in translation, interpreting, and mediation, preparing you for dynamic careers in multicultural, multilingual, and tech-driven environments. The course combines theoretical learning with practical exercises. You will study with translation theorists and practitioners, as well as experts in cultural and literary studies, history, and anthropology. We are ranked 10th in the UK for Languages and Linguistics, Guardian 2026.

Key Features and Distinctiveness • Technology Focus: You will gain practical experience using industry-standard software such as Trados and memoQ (widely used in language-related professions) and familiarize yourself with interpreting equipment. • Specialist Modules: You can choose from a range of modules including: o Translation, Interpreting, and Mediation. o Subtitling and Audiovisual Translation. o Professional Writing and Editing. o Public Service Interpreting. • Work Placement Option: An optional placement module is available, giving you the chance to apply your skills in a work environment of your choice. • Research Environment: As a postgraduate student, you will be part of a dynamic research environment, benefiting from events hosted by the Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research, and the Centre for Transnational Studies. • Language Specificity: For the 2025/26 academic year, this course is only available for translation between English and Chinese.
