Summary
Anaesthetists and intensive care doctors provide care to a broad spectrum of people - from completely healthy people having minor surgery, through to people with life-threatening injuries and illnesses.
Although major advances have been made resulting in much improved outcomes, we know that overall in-hospital mortality after surgery is still around 3.5%. Our research is focussed on addressing ways of addressing this:
-
improving our understanding of how the lungs, circulation and kidneys work in critical illness
-
clinical studies investigating new ways of caring for elderly patients with hip fracture
-
understanding and improving the safety of healthcare delivery in the peri-operative period.
Core research themes/topics include:
patient safety computational modelling hip fracture ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia vascular biology acute kidney injury
