Our staff are specialists across many areas of applied linguistics, including psycholinguistics, language development, second language acquisition and motivation theories of language learning.
We also offer research expertise in discourse analysis and sociolinguistics, with particular specialisms in health communication, media communication, professional communication, and language and identity studies.
We are unique in offering opportunities to do research in literary linguistics, narratology and cognitive poetics.

The partnership provides funding and training to support the professional and personal development of the next generation of arts and humanities doctoral researchers.

You will have the option of studying modules in sociolinguistics, psychology of language, discourse analysis, stylistics, corpus linguistics, first and second language acquisition and teaching English as a foreign language. We introduce the key ideas and concepts in applied linguistics, training you in relevant research methods including quantitative and qualitative approaches. You also have access to training, software and resources for conducting corpus-assisted studies of language in use.
