Summary

This programme is stimulated by a time of global and local change and challenge for social work and social services, both within and across borders. The Programme provides opportunities for academic exploration of practice, policy and applied research in social work and social services in diverse contexts. The teaching approach in this 1-year MSc promotes a 'global mindset'. This involves • learning from international developments in social work and social care • appreciation of global and cross-cultural influences on local practice • critical analysis of the role and identity of social workers in diverse contexts This Masters level Programme will support students in development of: • collaborative and independent learning skills • critical appreciation of concepts of professional judgement, shared decision making, professional support and professional leadership • appreciation of varied perspectives on professional roles, relationships and approaches to social work • critical knowledge of social work/social services in diverse contexts • skills and abilities to inquire, synthesise and critically analyse research and information as relevant to social work/social services • recognition of skills and values required in respectful and flexible engagement and collaboration

Taught modules will require students to engage with ethical issues and dilemmas relating to social work in differing contexts. The programme will equip students with knowledge of core research methods and skills as relevant to the dissertation / professional project assignment. This will be presented in article format. The accessible, disciplined and succinct presentation skills required will be useful in a range of employment. Students will be allocated a personal academic tutor who will provide academic support and guidance to help shape and facilitate learning on the programme.

The programme will be of interest to those who wish to develop a career within research or policy development, or within the non-professionally qualified social care workforce in the UK or globally.
