Summary
Our Forensic Psychology Practice Doctorate (ForenPsyD) confers the award of Doctorate in Forensic Psychology Practice and provides eligibility for BPS Chartered Psychology status, eligibility to apply for HCPC registration as a Forensic Psychologist, and full membership of the Division of Forensic Psychology.
This programme combines academic teaching, research, and professional training during forensic placements.
It is open only to Psychology graduates who are registered with the BPS (GBC status). On completion you are eligible for BPS Chartered Psychology status and full membership of the Division of Forensic Psychology. You will also be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Forensic Psychologist.
In the Centre for Applied Psychology, we are committed to involving experts by experience in all the different aspects relevant to our teaching and research. The Experts by Experience Steering Committee (EBESC) is a group that meets regularly to discuss, organise and support the work of experts by experience linked to the Forensic Psychology Doctorate Programme. We comprise members from various backgrounds, including local experts by experience who contribute to the course and staff from the Centre for Applied Psychology.

| Entry requirements | A good Honours degree (2.1 or above) in psychology that confers the GBR (Graduate Basis for Registration) with the BPS (British Psychological Society) and experience working in a forensic setting. Trainees must complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (previously the Criminal Records Bureau check) before attending any placement. This course is exempt from the ‘Rehabilitation of Offenders Act’ and no convictions are considered ‘spent’. Relevant forensic experience or similar alternative |

Begin your career by embarking on our Forensic Psychology Doctorate, the first of its kind in the UK. Broaden your understanding and gain skills and practical experience whilst diving into significant research projects of real world relevance.
You'll acquire the essential knowledge and skills needed to expertly analyse offending behaviour and its impact on victims. Learn how to manage, assess, and create effective treatment strategies for both victims and offenders. You'll be on your way to work as an expert providing consultancy, crafting professional reports and delivering impactful training. By the end of the course, you'll be equipped with cutting-edge skills in practice, research, and evaluation that will set you apart in the field!
Our Forensic Psychology Doctorate was the first of its kind in the UK, is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as conferring eligibility to apply for registration on completion.
The course was successfully re-accredited by the British Psychological Society in May 2024 and was particularly commended for its service user involvement. The visiting team noted that "[the] programme displays levels of co-production and deep integration that are exceptional" The course is unique in that it integrates both practice and academic teaching throughout the duration. Applying theory to practice is a key focus on the course. We emphasise an evidence-based approach to forensic practice, fully integrating issues of diversity, equality, and inclusion. A number of placement providers offer bursaries or funding in some form. Please do feel free to get in touch with the Placement Coordinators at application stage to discuss.
