The Department of Modern Languages is an interdisciplinary hub of research and we welcome research proposals that go beyond subject boundaries. You can be jointly supervised by an academic specialising in Italian Studies and another from a different discipline, depending on your research interests.
Research a range of cultural, literary, historical, and socio-political topics related to periods from medieval to contemporary Italy. Our expertise includes literary studies, history of art, translation studies, sexuality and gender studies and cultural studies in the field of Italian studies. We're home to one of the UK's largest academic communities of researchers exploring the European national cultures.
