The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) was initially phased in from 1st September 2021 as the new centralised way to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. The introduction of the SQE means that everyone who becomes a solicitor will undergo the exact same process and meet the same high standards. It has since replaced the Legal Practice Course (LPC), which was the standard route to practice as a solicitor, though some transitional arrangements still exist as it phases out.

The SQE forms part of a four-step route to becoming a solicitor in England and Wales:

1. Degree or equivalent qualification in any subject
