Summary

About the course The Postgraduate Diploma in Medicine is offered to EU and non-EU medical graduates in training who wish to develop their research skills, broaden their research interests, and develop advanced knowledge in selected areas of clinical and scientific practice. The course syllabus and curriculum have been developed following consultation with medical trainees in Ireland to ensure that the course fulfills their needs in terms of higher medical training at national and international level. A substantial amount of postgraduate medical training takes place in university teaching hospitals; however trainees have few opportunities to maximise integration with the university environment to progress their training needs. In addition postgraduate training incorporates very little time for research. It is vital that trainees are equipped with an ethos of enquiry-led practice and research skills from the earliest possible postgraduate period in order to maximise their potential research output.

Course Objectives The course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and competence to extend their professional role within the healthcare system. On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

Implement all legal and ethical requirements pertaining to the contemporary practice of med-icine Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the principles of health service management and be ca-pable of incorporating these into clinical practice Critically appraise research data and write research reports Evaluate the key concepts of global health and examine the major challenges affecting health systems and health outcomes globally Discuss the role of the doctor in the primary and secondary prevention of disease at population level Manage all aspects of patient care, including adverse outcomes, as part of a multi-disciplinary Evaluate research hypotheses, the design of experimental studies and the scientific and ethical conduct of research In addition to obligatory “core” modules, students will be able to choose optional modules according to their chosen career pathway. Their research project will also reflect their chosen optional pathway of learning.
