The course is interdisciplinary in nature and involves a combination of theoretical and practical approaches.
- Get involved in internationally leading research at a top UK university, part of the Russell Group for worldwide research excellence.
- Designed to Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) guidelines.
- Accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), demonstrating relevance to industry.
**What you'll study**
This MRes programme aims to provide you with specialised skills in research methods and practice, as well as helping you to build transferable skills to prepare you to conduct materials research in industry.
You’ll work on your research project alongside your taught module classes throughout the academic year. You’ll be based within one of our materials-based research groups while completing your project, which can be focused on fields such as ceramics, polymers, composites, elastomers, functional materials or manufacturing technologies. Your research project could lead to publication in peer-reviewed journals, and exposure at scientific conferences.
You can expect to gain significant practical experience in our world-class processing facilities, including the NanoVision Centre for Advanced Microscopy, providing tools for high resolution imaging, plus structural, chemical and mechanical analysis.
Our MRes in Materials Research has been accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) under license from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.
**Structure**
Three elective modules
Research project
**Teaching**
You’ll be taught and supervised by staff with extensive varied experience in research and industry, in areas such as nuclear reactors, micro and nano-mechanics, metallurgy, field assisted processing, thermo electronics and more. A number of staff hold memberships and fellowships with The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Physical Sciences Research Council.
Our academic research feeds into our teaching at all levels, ensuring you share in the latest advancements.
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and laboratory sessions, as well as completing coursework for academic feedback. You will be assigned an Academic Advisor who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary.

Summary
This MRes programme provides you with specialised skills in research methods and practice, as well as giving you complementary transferable skills through your elective modules, which prepare you to conduct materials research in industry.
The course is interdisciplinary in nature and involves a combination of theoretical and practical approaches. You’ll explore core topics and then have the option to take modules ranging from Manufacturing Processes to Nanotechnology and Advanced Functional Materials.
You’ll work on your research project alongside your taught module classes throughout the academic year and you’ll be based within one of our materials-based research groups in the School of Engineering and Materials Science. Your research project may be focused in the fields of ceramics, polymers, composites, elastomers, functional materials or manufacturing technologies. Your cutting-edge research can lead to publication at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
Not only is this MRes’ curriculum closely aligned to current industry needs, you can gain significant practical experience in our world-class processing facilities, including the NanoVision Centre for Advanced Microscopy, combining high resolution imaging with structural, chemical and mechanical analysis.
Our Materials Research MRes has been accredited by IOM3, on behalf of the Engineering Council and a suffix "EngC Pathway" will be added to the degree title when a student satisfies the accreditation requirements.
Progression and award requirements for an accredited MRes are stricter than these requirements for a standard QMUL degree. If a student does not satisfy the accreditation requirements, but does satisfy the requirements for a standard QMUL degree, the "EngC Pathway" suffix will not be added.
