University of Greenwich appoints new Vice Chancellor

Greenwich UniversityThe University of Greenwich has appointed Professor Jane Harrington as its new Vice Chancellor.

Professor Harrington is currently in the role of Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol, she will assume her new position at the University of Greenwich in December 2019.

Speaking about her appointment, Professor Harrington says, "It is a great honour to have the opportunity to be joining the University of Greenwich as the next Vice Chancellor. I am passionate about the role that universities can and should play in their regions and more widely; both developing graduates who are ready to take up their chosen careers from day one of leaving university and also the power of applied research to transform society for the better. I particularly want to get to know all of our regional, national and international partners to ensure that the University is a positive place to engage and work with, and one where we are actively supporting partners to meet their skills challenges and needs."

Meanwhile Chair of Governors at the University of Greenwich, Marianne Ismail, comments, "I'm delighted that Jane will be joining the University of Greenwich later this year. She will be bringing with her a wealth of experience. I particularly welcome her focus on widening access to higher education and her experience developing UWE's enterprise strategy, which established strong links with businesses and other stakeholders. Taken together with her commitment to teaching and research excellence and the student experience, I am confident she will ensure that our students continue to achieve extraordinary things."

Professor Harrington is a former lecturer in Human Resources Management and was named in the Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the West 2019. She was integral in driving forward UWE's performance, leading the university's Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework submission to achieve Gold in 2018 as well as improvements to its National Student Survey score. Professor Harrington succeeds Professor David Maguire who will be retiring at the end of the year.
