Royal College of Art pre-masters program aids students’ progression

Royal College of ArtThe Royal College of Art offers an excellent pre-masters program – the Graduate Diploma Art & Design – to help students prepare for the rigours of an MA or MRes at the world’s top ranked art and design university.

This course focuses on introducing the role and influence of art and design in the world today, and helps students gain skills around contemporary practices. On completion, students will have a portfolio of work and confidence in both their creative, academic and English language abilities. Depending on their final grade, students are guaranteed place, or interview for, an RCA masters degree.

RCA newsNigerian Graduate Diploma student Sosa Yande came to the RCA to study on the Communication pathway of the Graduate Diploma. She says, “I was at a point where I felt like I needed to establish a visual identity for myself – a unique visual language (or languages) that encompasses all my skills and interests. I wanted to figure out who Sosa the artist is. I was hungry for knowledge and understanding of the art and design world as I came from a fashion promotion and imaging background.”

On the Graduate Diploma program, Sosa worked on a project about the long-lasting legacy of colonialism and its effects on the black body and mind in the context of the culture surrounding Afro-Caribbean hair. She explains, “It’s about physiological conditioning and mental oppression. It is about relationships between people and unspoken notions of power birthed from a history of colonialism.”

Sosa is very much enjoyed her time at the RCA – and when asked to describe the experience in just three words she chose “challenging, stimulating and connecting”.

The Graduate Diploma Art & Design is a 30-week program of full-time study with specialism in Communication; Fine Art; Humanities; Fashion & Textiles, and Product, Interiors & Spatial Design. The next intake is January 2020, and applications are now being accepted.
