RCA has scholarships to fund automotive design leaders
The Royal College of Art (RCA) has two great scholarships to help fund students on its MA in Intelligent Mobility (formerly Vehicle Design).
With graduates employed in the design departments of most major automotive companies in the world, the MA Intelligent Mobility (formerly Vehicle Design) is one of the Royal College of Art’s most successful courses. To help aspiring students from around the world to finance their studies on this 15-month masters program, the RCA has the following scholarships available:
1. Ameea Scholarships – four scholarships for full tuition fee plus £2,000 towards maintenance, for UK/EU students.
2. Heveningham Concours Scholarship – one scholarship valued at £30,000, and applicants from any nationality are eligible.
These scholarships have proven invaluable to students and not just for the financial support. Ryan Sinton, a current scholarship holder says, "It was a great honour to be awarded The Heveningham Concours Scholarship. The scholarship has allowed me to study at the Royal College of Art – it has empowered me and given me confidence in my own abilities."
The move to Intelligent Mobility from Vehicle Design has brought with it a new diversity in the backgrounds of students. Whilst previously the majority of students had an undergraduate degree in automotive or engineering design, the RCA is now seeing applicants with backgrounds in graphic, interior and product design as well as architecture and urban design, visual arts and animation.
Head of the program, Dr Chris Thorpe, explains, “The Intelligent Mobility MA program has evolved from the renowned Vehicle Design MA and now targets a much broader spectrum of mobility design challenges faced by the industry. The skills required span a much wider set of sub-disciplines than before – which in turn open many new career and design opportunities across this sector.”
And the sector is on board with these changes providing opportunities for student engagement such as recent live projects with Porsche, Bentley, Citroen, Jaguar, Kia and TATA. Another major project with British Airways, in collaboration with other RCA programs, culminated in an exhibition in London’s Saatchi Gallery in July this year.
These opportunities really enrich the student experience, as Ryan explains, “From my time on the MA Intelligent Mobility course I have learnt a great deal about working with companies and what they expect in terms of results and final outcome. These have really been invaluable experiences for me to understand how professional in the industry work in these processes."
Graduates not only go on to stimulating and exciting careers but also financially rewarding ones. A recent survey of RCA graduates found nearly 30% of alumni from the past 15 years earning a salary of over £100,000 and over one half earning £60,000 or more.
Potential students who wish to be considered for either scholarship must have submitted an application to the MA Intelligent Mobility by Wednesday 20th November, 2019.
