Summary
The MSc in Health Services Research is for those who are seeking to gain or enhance a high level of health research skills. It is also for those who wish to pursue a career in public health or health services delivery and analysis in the UK and internationally with:

This is a specialist MSc to provide you with a wide range of health services research methodologies, and with a high standard within those methodologies. You can be confident after successfully completing the course that you will have the skills to be able to proceed with a PhD or tackle higher-level analyses in your area of health services research.
The Health Services Research MSc is based in the Institute of Health & Society in Newcastle University’s medical school, the Faculty of Medical Sciences. The Institute, headed by Prof Allyson Pollock, is one of the UK’s leading public health departments.
The MSc in Health Services Research grows out of the Institute’s determination to undertake research and teaching to: reduce health inequalities address social injustice improve population health locally, nationally, and internationally
What you'll learn Among the areas covered are: systematic reviewing and critical appraisal evaluative methods in health services research applications of epidemiology to public health tackling and challenging health inequalities and other social determinants of health health systems and healthcare policy
Your development You can follow your interests and develop specialisms through the public health research project, which is developed in collaboration with our expert staff. You can choose from a wide range of projects put forward by our academics, or propose your own.
Projects vary and can involve: primary data collection (quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods) secondary analysis of a wide range of available datasets systematic review
You receive a thorough grounding in introductory and advanced research methods. You’ll be provided with regular research supervision throughout the course.
Delivery The course consists of taught modules and a supervised project and dissertation. Your project and dissertation are an extremely valuable opportunity for you to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills learnt in the taught component of the course.
Teaching is via a mix of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. We encourage active learning through discussion, problem-solving and group work. Some teaching sessions may involve student presentations, and preparation or further reading. Individual study is required for other sessions. Module delivery varies from semester length to intensive block teaching.
Facilities You will be based in the Baddiley-Clark Building, adjacent to the main Faculty of Medical Sciences site.
You will have access to: open plan workspaces meeting rooms of all sizes 'breakout' areas for informal discussion
