Summary
On our MSc Medical microbiology course, you’ll develop an advanced understanding of the subject and gain the necessary skills for a variety of academic, research or clinical settings. You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of:

You’ll then complete an independent research project aligned to your interests. Supported by expert staff and using specialist laboratory facilities, you’ll gain hands-on experience and professional-level research skills. In the past, students have used this as an opportunity to collaborate with hospitals across Greater Manchester to further enhance their employability.

| Entry requirements | You’ll need a UK honours degree – normally a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, in biological or biomedical science, including the study of Medical Microbiology. We might also consider your application if you a have an equivalent professional qualification or substantial relevant professional experience, or if you have an HNC Medical Laboratory Science plus at least 10 years’ experience. If you are a fellow of The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), you may be eligible for exemption from some of the units on the course. |

Summary
We’ve designed our MSc Medical Microbiology to enable you to develop an advanced theoretical understanding, together with the practical techniques you’ll need to apply those theories in a research or clinical context.
On this masters degree, you’ll gain a well-rounded understanding of analytical approaches and human disorders. To further your knowledge, you’ll develop an in-depth study of human infectious diseases, cultivating the skills that are required to understand, control and manage those diseases.
You’ll also complete an independent research project, building professional-level research skills. This is your opportunity to explore the issues that fascinate you most by accessing our extensive research knowledge base to conduct projects in a real-world context.
By the time you graduate, you should be equipped with the technical and analytical approaches required for practice at a specialist level.
Our course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) which means our teaching is industry relevant and provides wide-ranging, research-informed education to ensure you develop the practical skills and experience that employers value. Please note that although this MSc is accredited by the IBMS, it does not fulfil the requirements to gaining registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and does not provide the opportunity to complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio.
