Programme Overview

The MSc One Health and Tropical Disease combines and applies the principles, themes, and investigative disciplines of biology to the study of infectious diseases of animals and humans within tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, within their shared and changing environment and climate. Recognising LSTM’s mission, the focus starts within low- and middle-income regions of the world, outwards to global impacts, through neglected, new and (re)emerging diseases, preparing for global epidemics, food security, wildlife, conservation, companion animals and changing climate and land use.

A range of zoonotic and non-human-animal specific infectious diseases are found in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. The cause of these diseases can be parasites, viruses, bacteria and fungi, with many transmitted by arthropod vectors and molluscan intermediate hosts. As well as the zoonotic threat to human health from many animal diseases, significant economic loss to livestock food production, companion animals, wildlife and conservation programmes, is suffered through animal pathogens.

Delivered by an internationally diverse team of research-active experts, the broad scope of the course ranges across biology, biochemistry, immunology, ecology and population biology of the organisms of importance to animal, human and environmental public health in tropical regions with limited resources and their associated epidemiology.

The programme will allow students to develop employer-relevant transferable skills, producing independent and collaborative team workers, critical thinkers, adaptable problem-solvers, and confident communicators in a range of environments. Experience in essential laboratory, field, and computing-based research techniques, as well as significant theoretical and applied practical knowledge in topical areas of the field is further provided within core taught elements. Students will demonstrate and apply their comprehensive understanding and critical awareness through completion of a research-based dissertation either overseas or in Liverpool, with opportunities to engage with professional and industrial bodies in global health.

Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine

Liverpool School Of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) was founded on the 12th November 1898 by Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, an influential shipping magnate. At this time Liverpool was a prominent port city and enjoyed extensive trade with overseas regions such as West and Southern Africa. This led to a high number of patients in the region being admitted to hospital with ‘tropical’ diseases, and so Sir Alfred Jones donated £350 to set up a School of Tropical Medicine to investigate these outbreaks. 115 years later LSTM was awarded higher education institution status in 2013.
