Discover the University of Bristol
Founded in 1876, the University of Bristol is one of the UK’s top 10 universities (QS World University Rankings 2026), with a global reputation for world-leading research and academic excellence. As a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities, Bristol also ranks top five in the UK for research (THE analysis of REF 2021).
With its independent and pioneering spirit, the University has a reputation for doing things differently. Bristol was the UK’s first institute of higher education to admit women on an equal basis with men. In 2019, we were also the first UK university to declare a climate emergency, and as part of our commitment to sustainability we are aiming to become carbon neutral by 2030.
Bristol has a diverse and friendly academic community, with students and staff that come from over 140 countries around the world.
Life in Bristol
Located in the Southwest of England, Bristol has a unique and vibrant atmosphere, with all the energy of a big city combined with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere that will help you to feel at home.
The university campus sits at the heart of the city, allowing you to experience the best of Bristol’s lively arts and music scene, independent shops and buzzing neighbourhoods. And with London less than two hours away, and the English and Welsh coastlines and countryside nearby, there are endless opportunities to explore further.
Our programmes
Bristol offers both taught and research programmes in a vast range of subject areas, where you’ll be able to learn from intentionally renowned academics and join our thriving interdisciplinary research community.
The majority of taught programmes last one year full-time or two years part-time, and lead to a master’s qualification (MA, MSc, MRes, LLM). We also offer a number of programmes that can be studied to postgraduate certificate or diploma level.
Our research degrees are studied over three to four years and usually lead to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification. The University also offers a growing number of professional and extended doctoral programmes, as well as master's degrees by research.
Facilities
The University continually invests in new and existing buildings, facilities and technology to support our students and enhance their study experience. Our facilities include purpose-built study centres, eight libraries housing the largest academic collection in Southwest England, and cutting-edge laboratories.
With a new campus being developed at the heart of our city, state-of-the art facilities and an internationally renowned research environment, it’s an exciting time to become a University of Bristol student.
At the centre of campus is Senate House, a student hub with a café, bar and study spaces. Senate House is also home to the Students’ Union, where students can get involved in over 350 clubs and societies in areas such as academia, hobbies, politics and more. The Global Lounge is also based here and is a popular place for students to learn about other cultures and discover global opportunities, with regular events allowing domestic and overseas students to connect and form a diverse and vibrant community.
The University also boasts over 70 student-led sports clubs, with a comprehensive range of on-campus sports facilities including a swimming pool, multipurpose sports hall and a well-equipped gym. Grass and artificial pitches, an indoor tennis centre and Olympic-standard weightlifting facilities can also be found just a short distance from campus.
