Askham Bryan College

 

The University Centre at Askham Bryan College is the Higher Education arm of the College and provides a range of validated Degrees (Foundation, Undergraduate and Postgraduate) all delivered at the Askham Bryan College York campus. 

The College received University Centre status in 2018 but has delivered higher education programmes since the 1970s. Following a growing number of Foundation, Top Up degrees as well as BSc programmes, 2019 saw University Centre Askham Bryan offer its first ever MSc programmes.

Department areas include Animal Management, Equine Science, Horticulture, Arboriculture, Agriculture and Veterinary Nursing and Sport.

Postgraduate MSc programmes now include:

MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare 

MSc in Zoo Management and Conservation 

Facilities and accommodation
En-suite accommodation is offered on campus in a modern 63-room block. This is on a half-board basis with meals available for purchase in the canteen using a pre-loaded food card. However, kitchens are provided for making snacks and hot drinks.

Within the main College building there are another 60 rooms with shared bathroom facilities, all recently refurbished. Forty of these rooms are offered on a half-board basis, with kitchens available for making snacks and hot drinks.

The remaining twenty rooms are offered on a self-catering basis with fully-equipped kitchens for a more independent living experience.

Bursaries and scholarships are available to students who may need financial assistance in order to help meet accommodation costs.

Applications for accommodation will open in April 2020 and it is advisable to submit your request as soon as possible.

The local city/town and surrounding area
Askham Bryan Village where the campus is located is a short bus ride from York City Centre and widely accessible throughout the week through a regular service.

An historically rich city, York is the perfect place to study, with two universities and two colleges there is a vibrant mix of activities for students to undertake, such as cinemas, music venues, clubs, shopping, museums, cafes and restaurants.

Popular neighbouring cities such as Leeds, Sheffield and accessible in under an hour from excellent rail links, with London just two hours away and Edinburgh just over two hours.

In February 2014 the Quality Assurance Agency undertook their five yearly review visit. They have reported the following findings which were exceptional in the 2014 judgement year:

• The maintenance of the threshold academic standards of the awards offered on behalf of degree-awarding bodies meets UK expectations.

• The quality of student learning opportunities is commended

• The quality of the provider’s information about learning opportunities meets UK expectations

• The enhancement of student learning opportunities is commended

There were six areas of good practice cited.
