Doctor of Philosophy - PhD
Summary
Why study MPhil/PhD Art at Goldsmiths
We support innovative art research in fine art, curating, art writing and across disciplines.
-
The MPhil/PhD Art is a 3-4 year (full-time) or 6-8 year (part-time) research project, the pursuit of which may involve your already-established practice, or may require the development of new modes of practice specific to the project.
-
Research degrees in this department have two elements: the research work that you carry out individually under supervision, and a programme of seminars and installations which bring you into dialogue with other research students and a wider community inside and outside Goldsmiths
-
We welcome proposals for research in any area of fine art, curating and art writing. We give priority to those with proposals for research within the areas of interest of our staff.
Programme pathways Within the overarching programme of MPhil/PhD in Art, there are three different pathways for undertaking doctoral research:
Pathway 1: Thesis by Practice (with written critical account of research) Pathway 2: Thesis by Practice and Written Dissertation Pathway 3: Thesis by Written Dissertation
Supervision Every research student has a supervisory team consisting of a Primary Supervisor and a Second Supervisor. As we encourage and support interdisciplinary research, many of our research students have Second Supervisors in another Department.
The exact structure of your supervision will be determined by the nature of your project and through discussion with your supervisory team. However, it is expected that you will maintain regular contact with your supervisors throughout the research project
Facilities and support The Department of Art has 11 specialist art practice areas providing support for a wide variety of processes that complement and extend traditional disciplines, such as metalwork, casting, woodwork, ceramics, textiles, print, photography, 3D printing, graphics, video editing, animation and 3D modelling.
Full time students currently have access to studio space and all MPhil/PhD students may make use of bookable spaces subject to availability, and we encourage regularly exhibiting practice-based work. A programme of installations functions as a means of public engagement with research projects. Research degrees are supported by further courses and professional development provided by the Graduate School.

Graduate Diploma - Grad Dip
Summary
Why study the Graduate Diploma in Art at Goldsmiths
This Pre-Masters programme is aimed at students who are considering undertaking an MA/MFA in Art or Curating but need a year to develop their practice and engage with discourses that support this. The programme will help you develop a critical understanding of your own practice, and the contemporary artistic, academic, social, and political contexts in which that practice occurs.
What is the Graduate Diploma in Art? The Graduate Diploma in Art is an innovative 12-month, studio-based programme designed for graduates who have experience in the creative professions, or those who have trained in other areas but wish to acquire skills within a fine art context. Successful completion guarantees you a place on any MA/MFA in the Goldsmiths Art Department.
Who is it for? The programme offers a point of entry for students who intend to study at postgraduate level but do not possess the traditional academic qualifications, or those students who wish to further develop a body of fine art work, or international students who seek to improve their English language.
We welcome diverse creative practices that may involve developing drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation, performance, art writing, curation, textiles, fashion, photography, sound, digital media and video, as well as poetry, spoken word, history of art and theory.
Dedicated studio space, facilities and support The programme’s location on the main Goldsmiths campus in South East London, with proximity to some of the world’s leading artistic and scientific institutions, provides an opportunity to explore the city and use London as a resource.
All students are allocated a dedicated studio space, and specialist Art Practice Areas provide support for a wide variety of processes that complement and extend traditional disciplines. You will have a personal tutor who will provide academic support and assistance in researching and considering the MA degree options for your future studies.
The student-centred approach of the Graduate Diploma in Art scaffolds you to work independently on top of scheduled sessions, where you will use a range of additional resources including the Art Practice Areas and the Goldsmiths Library.
