Jessica, 22, is studying an MA in International Journalism at Cardiff University. The Canadian student chose to study this subject in the UK because it is one of the leading countries in the world for studying journalism.
Speaking about being awarded one of our £2,000 Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries, Jessica says, “I’m so grateful to have found Postgrad Solutions because as an international student, I do not qualify for many of the scholarships offered in the UK, so this bursary makes a huge difference for me!” She continues, “ I am funding my tuition purely through student loans so this alleviates so much of the burden. Studying at Cardiff University
When researching into her options Jessica felt that Cardiff University’s program is a unique course that is relevant for her dream of having an international career. Talking about her choice, she says, “The program spoke to me because journalism is all about storytelling and understanding the complexity of life. It’s the craft of looking past the surface to find the truth that is waiting to be discovered.”
Jessica continues, “With the rise of unregulated online networks and misinformation, the media industry is facing an era of rapid transformation and degradation that can be disheartening to witness, but I have faith in the innovative ways journalism is evolving alongside these changes, and would like to promote a positive outlook to combat the growing distrust in the media.”
Before starting her masters degree, Jessica studied a bachelors in Media Information Studies and found it to be increasingly relevant in the era of AI, Big Data, and surveillance capitalism. At the time she was studying abroad in Singapore and realised the importance of foreign correspondence and cross-border reporting, which inspired her to pursue a postgraduate education. She says, “Naturally, a masters degree made sense to me because I want to become an expert in this field, build my portfolio, and most of all, build my confidence as I transition into the professional realm.”
On her postgraduate program, Jessica is currently specialising in documentary filmmaking, which is perfect for combining her creativity with her love of practical investigative journalism. In fact, she is really enjoying her course so far explaining, “It’s such a diverse class as we have people from various continents and backgrounds, and the faculty has been so supportive and accommodating. In just the first few weeks, we’ve learned technical skills, practiced using professional cameras, and spoken to industry leaders. You get started right away and while the course load is heavy, it is highly rewarding and pushes everyone to reach their full potential.”
Jessica continues, “It is a privilege to be taught by lecturers with first-hand experience with key journalistic events. From Apartheid to the Iraq War to the Yugoslav conflict, they have been actively challenging those in power and reporting from extreme environments for decades. Journalism comes with a heavy moral responsibility, but through their guidance, I feel better prepared to tackle any upcoming issues. Their wisdom is beyond valuable to me, and I am immensely grateful to have them pass down the torch as they truly envision a better future for the state of mass media. Under their tutelage, I want to bring that future into fruition.”
Her ultimate goal is to use the postgraduate qualification in journalism to help others. She explains, “Through working in journalism, I want to be an advocate for those who are invisible in society – who are too easily dismissed, ignored and invalidated. Through documentary storytelling, I wish to dive deep into the unique identities that exist in the world and find people who don’t seem to fit into a single category. By telling human stories, I hope to connect people from various cultures and remind them that we are all more similar than we think.”
Cardiff University is proving to be an excellent choice of institution, Jessica explains, “In postgraduate programs, everyone you meet has a very strong personal motivation for being there. I’ve really found a sense of community here at Cardiff and the environment is extremely empowering to be a part of because you can really feel the passion radiating off each person – so we end up learning so much from one another.”
She continues, “Not only has this given me the opportunity to connect with a new network of bright and inspiring individuals, but I truly feel like this program has solidified my sense of purpose and identity as a journalist. Plus, Cardiff as a city is perfect for students as well because it’s extremely safe and affordable compared to other campuses in the UK.”

Studying at the National Film and Television School
The 28-year-old British student chose to study an MA in Editing after spending the last 10 years experimenting with various elements of filmmaking – he explains, “I realised that after writing, planning and executing a shoot, my favourite stage is sitting down alone with the footage and piecing together the jigsaw puzzle. I wanted to take this passion to the next level and get the best training possible to pursue editing as a career.”
Ben chose to study at the NFTS because it is one of the best film schools in the world, with many of its alumni going on to produce some of the world’s best-loved films and television shows. He says, “As I am entering this field slightly later, I wanted the best chance I could get at making it in the industry. The NFTS provides an opportunity to make films for two years with talented people from around the world – it is an intensely creative environment where I will have the chance to try, to fail, and to learn.”
Speaking more about his chosen course and career path, Ben says, “The film industry is a difficult one to enter. I didn’t grow up with any family connections to it and had no idea where to start. I always thought it best to study something more academic in case my creative endeavours weren’t successful.” He continues, “I eventually came to the realisation that whatever I was doing professionally, I was always making videos/short films/photography/etc on the side and so I decided to make a commitment to my creative ambitions and apply to the NFTS.”
