The University of Buckingham’s School of Postgraduate Medicine is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and offers a number of programmes. Designed to bring core and speciality training, our postgraduate medical degrees are comprehensive one-, two- or three-year training courses.
Our newest programme, MSc Practitioner in Psychological Trauma, has been developed in partnership with the Centre for Developmental and Complex Trauma, St Andrew’s Healthcare, and listed for accreditation by the British psychological Society (BPS) to provide expert understanding and professional competencies in psychological trauma informed care. It provides health professionals the theoretical understanding and professional competences to provide psychological services to those who require specialised trauma care. The MSc operates within a framework of understanding the idiosyncratic care needs of service users to provide an integrated and holistic approach to specialist trauma care whilst equipping students with skills to develop trauma informed practice within their organisations and team. This is a taught, part time MSc, offered over two years. The structure and content of the MSc follow the level three ‘trauma expert’ competencies outlined by the British Psychological Society for working with people with psychological trauma related needs.
Assessed through workplace-based assessments and a dissertation, our Master of Surgery and Master of Medicine will give you the skills and knowledge you need to advance your medical profession. These courses are open to overseas doctors studying for PLAB and who would like to gain formal surgery or medical experience in a hospital environment in the UK. The MSurg and MMed are suitable for overseas students only and are conducted entirely at our placement hospitals. The current training hospitals are Milton Keynes University Hospital, Blackpool Victoria Teaching Hospitals, James Paget University Hospital, Stoke Mandeville Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham.
The part-time, fully online Master’s level Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education is designed for UK and international healthcare professionals involved in medical education and training. This programme provides a sound educational foundation for professionals from across the health professions who support undergraduate students and/or postgraduate trainees’ learning in Higher and Professional Education settings, including the clinical workplace.
As students on the above programmes study online or are based near their hospital placements, they will not be expected to attend the Buckingham campus or need a room in the University accommodation during their course of study
The Institute for Biomedical and Biosciences Research (IBBR), formerly the Buckingham Institute for Translational Medicine (BITM), is based within the Clore Laboratory. The Clore Lab was founded in 1986 by Professor Anne Beloff-Chain, wife of Nobel Laureate Sir Ernst Chain, with funds from the Clore Foundation. Our MSc by Research in Biomedical Science is hosted in the IBBR and brings together research skills required for a PhD, and technical expertise from across many subject areas in the biomedical sciences to provide you with training in several key areas of current research interest and to enhance your employment in academic and private institutions. This programme focuses on experimental science and a research-informed dissertation. It will provide you with practical laboratory-based experience with access to specialist techniques in state-of-the-art facilities.
