UCL Information Studies is a department within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and is the only UK department uniting courses in library and information studies, information science, archives and records management, publishing and digital humanities.
Leading the arts and humanities for 200 years
UCL Arts & Humanities, 7th in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 by subject, is recognised globally for its teaching and research excellence. Since its founding in 1826, UCL has placed the arts and humanities at its core. The first academic chairs in Britain in English, German, Greek, Hebrew & Jewish Studies, Italian, Latin, Philosophy, and Spanish were created at UCL between 1826 and 1828.
The faculty today encompasses ten academic departments, covering disciplines ranging from fine art to creative health to digital humanities, and offers an unparalleled variety in languages, cultures and societies. With our 200-year history of world-leading education and research, we aim to inspire creative and critical thinkers who will foster new constellations of humanities, social sciences, and science for generations to come.
We’re home to over 5,210 students, of which 3,800 are undergraduate, 1,150 are studying master’s degrees and around 260 are undertaking postgraduate research with us. We also host around 400 students for Study Abroad placements for the academic year or on a termly basis.
In addition to our programmes at UCL’s historic Bloomsbury campus in central London, we also offer innovative new courses at UCL East — our modern campus located in Stratford, on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Our alumni share why they chose postgraduate study at UCL Arts & Humanities:
“Specifically with respect to my career path, I was looking for a critical intersectional gender studies program that did not focus solely on women's studies. I only found it in the Gender, Society, and Representation MA, which was refreshing and pushed my career in the direction I wanted.”
Tamara Drove (Gender, Society and Representation MA), Consultant at UN Women Chile
“Looking back, applying to UCL was one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made. I didn’t know it then, but what I signed up for was much more than a degree, it was an invitation to rethink, to grow, and to imagine a future beyond what I thought possible.”
Lu Dong (International Master's in Economy, State and Society)
“I found my time at UCL helped me narrow down what I was truly passionate about. I studied MA European Culture and Thought: Culture which aligned closely with my interests, and I was able to explore a vast range of topics: policy, art theory, global politics – the list goes on! I wanted to pursue a career in arts and culture, and I am lucky enough to be working in the field now.”
Annabelle Fozard (European Culture and Thought: Culture MA), Coordinator at World Cities Culture Forum
