Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary - IT and Computer Science

Mingwei Wang, MSc System on Chip, University of Southampton

Mingwei Wang, 22, has come to the UK from China to study an MSc in System on Chip at the University of Southampton. He was delighted to be awarded a Postgrad Solutions Study Bursary, saying, “I was so surprised when I just received the good news, because it is really so hard for a foreign student to get tuition fee support in the UK. I searched over 200 different items of scholarships and bursaries, none of them provide aid to Chinese students except Postgrad.com!”

Southampton Mingwei continues, “I'm so grateful with this decision and can't say nothing more but many many thanks to all at Postgrad.com. My family is not rich, so £500 can really help me a lot with supporting my study. I can more focus on my study without worrying about financial burdens, because I found I rarely have time to take some part-time work. I'm considerably encouraged by this bursary, and becoming much more confident in myself than before.”

He found out about the Postgrad Solutions Study Bursaries through the Postgrad.com website, and explains, “I think Postgrad.com really provides a large amount of up-to-date useful information about taking postgraduate study. It accompanies us during the whole study flow, from admission, visa, fees to even work, almost giving supports of any kind!! You can find all what you need from Postgrad.com if you are considering about taking further study.”

Mingwei Wang chose to study at the University of Southampton because of its great reputation as one of the best research universities in the UK, and he has been very impressed with the way it helps international students to adapt to their new environment. One of the highlights of his first few weeks at the University of Southampton was the welcome dinner the held when he started the MSc programme which provided him with a perfect opportunity to make new friends.

He is studying an MSc programme in System On Chip (SOC), and is very impressed the way the course is organised and very excited about his final group project which will be to design a CPU (a computer’s central processing unit).

Mingwei opted to come from China to study in the UK because of its great education system, he says, “The UK has vast available research facilities on campus - the University of Southampton has a clean room of it own, which is the place to fabricate microchips. Whereas in China, only the top three universities have clean rooms.”

Mingwei‘s dream for the future is to launch a small scale IC design company in China in 15 years time, and transform it into another “Intel Empire“. To realise this dream he plans to spend the next five years doing academic research (MSc and PhD), and then follow this up by working in the IC design industry.
