University end-of-term ball… what not to wear

There are always certain social conventions to stick to at grand events such as university balls, but the main question that preoccupies everyone’s mind is what to wear?

Of course it seems like the guys have it easy yet again – all they need to do is put on a simple suit. In fact some university balls offer no leeway to the chaps whatsoever when it comes to ball-attire, but where’s the interest in that?!?

Some  guys, for example, will attend a very high-quality affair and as such have to adhere to strict dress codes with the uni website instructing all male attendees that they had to specifically wear white tie in order to be allowed entrance to the ball! Thus there is literally no room for experimentation – a little dull perhaps!

However for us girls there is such an array of dress styles to choose from, we hardly know where to start. And it seems that nowadays there are no defined rules about previously clear-cut issues such as how long the dress needs to be in order to fit in with a formal occasion.

Anyway, with term over and most of the university balls done and dusted, we’ve got a couple of snaps to see exactly what students were wearing to this social highlight of the uni calendar.

The dress code for this ball seems to be as long as it’s a frock wear whatever you want. Cover up as much, or as little, as you want, and be as garish as possible (or not) with your colours. From the floral retro number, spiced up with a pair of unmissable high heels, to the more glam red-carpet-esque, sleek, full-length frock, to the pink and orange extravaganza and the classic little black dress that shrieks ‘student party’ – these girls have many a fashion trend covered. The only thing they seem to have in common is that they are all wearing dresses.

The members of this smart-looking bunch have opted for a more traditional approach to formal attire. However if you look closely you’ll notice that the men of the group have taken the opportunity to be slightly daring with their bow ties! There’s a subtle red-wine-coloured one and more ‘off-the-wall’ college striped one (although please note that one male ball-attendee did say that it is ‘bad form’ to wear a non-plain bow tie when the dress code asks for black tie…). However we think it’s good that these guys are attempting to add a bit of personality to their outfits. And one of their female friends seems to have taken her fashion inspiration (or fashpiration…) from them and added a bow tie to finish off her own outfit – now that’s personality!
