Universities Utilizing Top Business Minds to Tailor Courses

The notion of a masters degree has evolved somewhat in the last 15 years, and what was once seen as an oddly placed qualification which was more than an undergraduate degree, but less than the hallowed doctoral theses, is now being touted as one of the most sought after qualifications of them all.

Whereas postgraduate courses used to be seen as an endeavour for those looking for a career in academia or research, new courses are now making the qualification extremely valuable to numerous other prospective students. The number of students enrolling on master’s degrees has increased by 145% in the last 10 years, with around 50% of these being overseas students, who are welcomed by universities as they add a depth of cultural diversity to the campus and tuition fees are also higher. So what has lead to the huge increase in enrolment for master’s degrees ?

Industry Tailored Courses

The biggest reason for the increase master’s course uptake over the last decade has been the evolution of courses towards much more industry specific subjects, and this change has been aided by input from industry insiders who have been able to tailor courses to suit the requirements of potential employers within the sector. The job market has become increasingly fierce for graduates, and having an industry specific master’s degree will really help students to gain the edge over their peers when applying for jobs. Students who have gained sector specific skills during their postgraduate studies will be at a distinct advantage over those who have not.

Exciting Prospects for Postgraduates

One example of the new type of master’s course being offered is the MA in Global Financial Markets, which is a course developed by the University of Leicester. This course seeks to teach students the detailed subject of global money markets and financial regulations as they apply to multinational companies. It is a superb course for career-minded students who are looking for a job in NGO’s, large multinational charities, and other major companies, offering them an in depth look at the way that the financial system operates in relation to these organizations. This kind of knowledge would previously have only been learned through years of industry experience, so the opportunity to study it at postgraduate level is superb for many potential students.

Other examples of forward thinking industry specific courses which are being developed with the help of professional business minds include the University of Dundee’s MSc in Data Science, which is aimed directly at people looking to go into large analysis positions where a knowledge of complex data streams will be important, and the MSc in Blood Science, offered by London Met, which focuses on diagnostic techniques developed during working practices.
