UK degree applications drop by almost 10%
Official figures released by UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) reveal that the number of students from England applying to start degrees in 2012 has dropped by almost 10% since 2011.
These figures - which give the number of applications received by institutions by the official deadline of 15th January 2012 - also show that the overall number of UK students applying to do a degree has dropped by 8.7%, which is almost 44,000 people!
The introduction of university fees has been largely blamed for this drop in applications .
Universities UK Chief Executive, Nicola Dandridge, says, "While overall applications have decreased compared with the same point last year, the dip is far less than many were initially predicting. "
She continues, "We will now have to look in more detail at whether students from certain backgrounds have been deterred more than others. We will continue monitoring the impact of the new system on students and specific subjects. For prospective students, it's important to remember that there is still time to apply."
Overall the number of UK applicants has fallen from 506,488 in 2011 to 462,507 in 2012. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on postgraduate student applications.
