Top 10 Things To Do If You’re A Postgrad In Chester

If you’re planning on doing your postgrad studies in Chester we have our pick of the best activities to do in this historical city when you’re not studying. And don’t forget that if you’re still looking for your postgrad accommodation in Chester, our accommodation partner Fresh has some great student living options in the heart of this great student city.

Fresh Student Living1. Go to the zoo There are regular zoos and then there is Chester Zoo. The UK’s top zoo, people come from all over the world to see its 12,000 animals. You might think that at university age you are too cool for a zoo, put one look at a rhino and you’ll be as excited as any of the kids and tourists who flock there.

2. Enjoy historical drinking...

Why just go to any pub when you can go to one that’s been around for a thousand years? This is the draw of the Pied Bull bar, which has been a Chester landmark since the 1155. Although there have been minor improvements (including little things like electricity and running water), it still has its very historical charm.

3 ...and modern nightlife Despite being a Roman town, Chester has its share of good clubs for students that you can find without too much roman (ahem, sorry that should be roaming…) around. Rosies is a student staple, with its three different genre-specific rooms and famous Wednesday student nights, whereas fans of live music may prefer venues like Telford’s Warehouse or the amazing Church Bar.

4. Appreciate Roman architecture If you got a kick from the history of the Pied Bull, Chester has a lot more to offer you. For one, it has Roman walls that date from a millennium before even the ancient pub existed. Home to the most complete Roman wall in the country, it dates back to 2,000 years ago, and walking it now is a great way to see all the major sights of the city.

5. Visit Central Perk How often have you been halfway through an afternoon-long Friends marathon and thought to yourself ‘I wish I could hang out somewhere exactly like that? Well now your fantasies can be lived at Chester’s Central Perk. A tribute to New York coffee houses in general and the one in Friends specifically, it is the perfect place to have a coffee or two and discuss with your friends the rules of being ‘on a break’.

6. Take a selfie at the perfect spot number one…Chester Cathedral Because, it’s not really student life unless everyone can see you living it on social media, luckily Chester has plenty of photogenic spots. First amongst these is Chester cathedral, a grade one listed stunning spot that is part of Chester’s Roman history.

7. Take a selfie at the perfect spot number two… Eastgate Clock No greater source than the Chester Chronicle calls the Eastgate Clock ‘the UK’s second most photographed timepiece’. In fact, it is the second most snapped in the world, and with its cast iron framework it is arguably far prettier than a certain London clock that takes the top spot.

8. Spend a day on the river Boating isn’t just for Oxbridge students. Chester’s own River Dee offers a rather nice place to rent a boat, taking a day trip around the city or just spending a few hours chilling on the water with a few friends (especially if you have one or two mates with strong arms who do not mind rowing…).

9. Go old-style shopping Millennia of history are all very well and good, but sometimes you can’t beat a little bit of retail. Fans of both history and shopping will love the two tier shops at The Rows, featuring independent boutiques housed in historical setting from which ancient Chesterians would apparently throw rotten fruit at the Welsh. We do not recommend doing this today… 10 ...and new More cash strapped students may prefer to head to the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, the slightly out of town hub for penny-pinching students who still want to look good for a night at Rosies. Plus, it’s right next to an aquarium if you want to spend your day doing two weirdly opposite things.
