The importance of international education

NAFSA - the Association of International Educators - is the world’s largest non-profit professional organisation dedicated to international education, with almost 10,000 members.

It is a keen advocator of the importance of international education and encourages public policies that promote international education.

NAFSA is currently hosting its Annual Conference and Expo in Vancouver, Canada (from 29th May - 3rd June) where over 7,000 international educators are gathering to discuss ways and means of promoting international education. This is their 63rd conference and expo and its theme is “Innovation and sustainability in international education”.

Obviously in these tricky financial times, not to mention the social and economic impacts of the recent global natural disasters - the importance of international education can be overlooked.

Speaking at the opening session, NAFSA’s executive director Marlene Johnson, said, “It’s no secret that we are facing a challenging political and budgetary environment in the United States, and the prospects for expanding international education opportunities may seem pretty grim. Yet it is exactly at times like these that we must stand up and find new ways to articulate the importance of international education for our society and the goal of peace around the world.”

Members of NAFSA have a strong belief in the importance of international education and exchange for the promotion of global understanding, global skills exchange and ultimately a peaceful world.
