Introducing QMUL

Queen Mary University of London has quite the history. Dating back to the 18th century, it’s a university that’s built on four historic institutions – namely St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College and Queen Mary College – each of which had a very noble mission as QMUL details:

“All four institutions were founded to improve the lives of people with less privilege. St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and The London Hospital Medical College were established to improve the health of the local communities in the City and east London. Westfield College and Queen Mary College provided education to women and working class communities in the East End, respectively, at a time when these groups faced extreme barriers to education.”

QMUL is still renowned for its commitment to social justice and academic excellence, carrying forward its historic mission to broaden access to education and improve the lives of those less fortunate. As a result, 93% of QMUL students originate from state schools, while 46% are the first in their family to attend university.

As an institution, QMUL is particularly vocal about educational injustice, and regularly speaks out against the lack of funding for postgraduate study.

This Russell Group university has been breaking boundaries and bringing down the walls ever since. Its most notable achievements include the launch of a joint degree program with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), the first of its kind to be approved by China’s Ministry of Education. QMUL also has a long list of notable alumni that includes Nobel Prize winners, while its collaborations with major institutions give postgraduate students access to high-profile internships, placements and research partnerships.
