Part Time Courses Let Students Climb Ladder

Most people who did not continue their academic studies straight through to postgraduate level find it increasingly difficult to give up their job and head back into academia. There are a multitude of financial issues to take into consideration, bills, loans, mortgages, job and family responsibilities, all of which make a complete lifestyle change very hard.

There is a growing trend among working professionals to enrol on a part time postgraduate course in order to further their education and enable them to progress in their careers, without needing to quit their jobs to do it.

Not an Easy Route

Although part time degree courses make higher education accessible to a large number of working professionals, it is by no means an easy route to go down, as it is a large commitment to take on. Many part time courses last up to four years, and for full time workers, this is four years worth of studying in addition to their ordinary working week, with deadlines still needing to be met and exams to be revised for. A typical day may involve an eight hour work day plus a three hour evening class, which can be especially demanding for those with young families. Despite being a lot of hard work and commitment, many students say that they look forward to the evening classes, and the support of their fellow students helps them to get through the course.

Distance Learning Options

Many part time courses can also be undertaken via distance learning , which gives students much more flexibility with their scheduling and enables them to fit study time in at the weekends. Many people work shifts, evenings, or nights, and completing a course which revolves around evening classes is simply not an option, making distance learning the perfect tool for furthering their academic success. Although distance learning allows for more flexibility, it does require much more self discipline to get the work completed on time as it is largely down to the individual.

Career Enhancement

Part-time university students are able to advance their careers whilst they work by gaining high level qualifications that allow them to progress in their current jobs or apply for new positions that are looking for qualified personnel. There are funding options available to help part time students who have a household income of less than £25K, and this is done through the National Scholarship Program .
