Overseas campuses on the rise
Universities are increasingly setting up overseas branches to cater to the Asian student market.
According to a report published by the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education (OBHE) earlier this month, universities from the UK are leading the growth having practically doubled their number of overseas outposts in the past two years, bringing the number to 25.
However the United States still has the greatest number of campuses abroad - with 87.
Overall, there are currently 200 overseas campuses, with another 37 in the pipeline!
The University of Central Lancashire has now announced plans to become the first UK institution to open a campus in Thailand, the University of Reading is opening one in Malaysia, and the University of Lancaster has announced that it will be opening an offshoot in China.
The United Arab Emirates currently hosts the largest number of overseas campuses at 37, but there are no new branches planned there. According to the OBHE report, "The centre of gravity is clearly shifting eastwards from the Gulf."
This is following on from the recent trend for regional UK universities to open campuses in London .
